BlueConic Dreamers: Mark Koenen

“Building the Dream” isn’t some empty, meaningless mantra we use at BlueConic. It’s a philosophy each and every member of the #BlueCrew abides by in daily efforts.

We truly strive to work smart, improve our skill sets, and bring out the best in one another by living our constitutional principles day in and day out — no exceptions.

Because we have such an awesome group working in tandem with one another to create the best customer data platform possible, we love to highlight them here on the blog.

Read another edition of our “BlueConic Dreamers” series to learn all about one of our beloved, hard-working team members — well, one of our cofounders, to be more specific.

All about Mark Koenen

Name: Mark Koenen
Title: Platform Product Owner (I’m responsible for how BlueConic functions and what it looks like.)
Where did you grow up?: Doetinchem, The Netherlands

What are two truths and a lie about yourself?

  1. Together, with other BlueConic members, I created one of the first websites in the Netherlands in the early 90s.
  2. I used to drink industrial amounts of soda. Currently, I only drink water, tea, coffee, and beer.
  3. I was given a student award for all the voluntary work I did outside college.

(The lie: I don’t drink coffee.)

What have you learned in your time at BlueConic?

A: I love this role and team!

What has challenged you the most at BlueConic?

A: Bringing all the power of BlueConic in a “package” that is easy to understand and use for the modern marketer. There are a few things that I do to create the best user experience:

  • I frequently visit marketers that use BlueConic and talk to them about what they like about BlueConic and in what areas it can still be improved.
  • I perform user tests to get feedback on very specific parts of BlueConic.
  • While discussing changes to BlueConic with our design team, we constantly try to push ourselves to find the ideal balance between ease of use and offering power features.

What, if anything, would you change about BlueConic?

A: Nothing, really.

What’s your advice to the newest #BlueCrew members?

A: Stay true to yourself, embrace the open culture we have, and act as if BlueConic were your own company.

What made you believe BlueConic was right for you?

A: Being one of the founders of BlueConic, I never had an interview. (Surprise!) The work I do at BlueConic is constantly challenging and never boring. Also, to see the BlueConic company grow as it does is really rewarding.

What’s your big focus at the moment? In the future?

A: The continuous strive to make the on boarding process as easy as possible will be the focus for quite a while I think. Not only in terms of getting new users familiar with the user interface, but more importantly get them quickly up to speed with implementing rewarding use cases.

What is your favorite BlueConic product feature?

A: Choosing one feature is like picking your favorite child; I love BlueConic for what it offers as a whole (which is more than just the sum of its parts).

What is your proudest moment so far at BlueConic?

A: Every time I travel to Boston and meet the U.S. colleagues, I feel really proud of the great and unique team that we have (both in The Netherlands as well as in Boston).

What are some of your favorite hobbies?

A: I just love taking pictures — especially portraits of people.

What’s your favorite sports team?

A: That would be Max Verstappen, who stirs up the Formula 1 scene quite a bit. While driving, he thinks “out of the box”: He makes moves nobody ever thought of (and deemed impossible).

What’s something on your bucket list?

A: Running the Boston Marathon! I just picked up running recently, and I experienced the great atmosphere at the New York Marathon. It inspired me to run a marathon. I mean, how awesome would it be to run it in Boston?!

What’s your at-work Spotify playlist?

A: “Release Radar,” featuring newly released tracks of artists that I like listening to. Knowing what we’ve done to implement the BlueConic Recommendations, I have deep respect for what Spotify automatically generates for me every day.

What’s your nickname (or favorite one)?

A: The Nose
