About the Company
This multi-billion-dollar global apparel brand serves consumers around the world through a mix of digital and physical commerce. Across EMEA, the brand operates at significant scale, creating millions of opportunities to turn customer interest into lasting relationships.
The brand partnered with BlueConic to put Growth Plays to work against specific commercial outcomes, starting with one of ecommerce’s most familiar challenges: cart abandonment.
Challenges
For the global apparel brand, cart abandonment represented a meaningful opportunity to recover revenue from shoppers who had already demonstrated strong purchase intent. But an abandoned cart can mean very different things depending on the customer. Some shoppers may simply get distracted. Others may still be weighing a purchase, waiting for reassurance, or holding out for an incentive. And another shopper might return and buy all on their own.
Across 15 EMEA markets, the brand’s existing cart recovery program had a much harder time telling those shoppers apart. It relied largely on a time-based email flow, with the same basic follow-up regardless of who had abandoned, what the brand already knew about them, or what might actually bring them back. At that scale, even small differences in who received a message or an incentive could add up — either to more recovered sales or to unnecessary marketing and discount costs.
The team also lacked a simple way to understand the commercial impact of its recovery efforts. Order data, email engagement, and paid-media performance were spread across different systems and teams, with each channel applying its own attribution logic. To piece together what had actually converted, marketers had to request data extracts, bring them together in Excel, and calculate attribution manually. By the time they had an answer, the opportunity to act on it could already be moving on.
That left the team with two deceptively simple questions: Who actually needs a nudge to come back? And when they do, how much revenue did the program recover?
Solution
The brand worked with BlueConic to rethink cart recovery around the customer behind the cart. The new approach brings together real-time shopping behavior, customer history, email and paid-media engagement, and confirmed order data in one connected program across all 15 markets.
It starts the moment a shopper shows signs of leaving. BlueConic captures cart and checkout behavior as it happens and connects it with customer history, including past purchases and interactions. Confirmed orders from the brand’s order management system are brought in throughout the day, so the team also knows when someone has come back and bought.
Those signals put the recovery journey in motion. Recent abandoners can receive a cart reminder through Marketing Cloud roughly two hours later, while broader audiences are continuously synced to Meta and Google for retargeting. Once a shopper completes an order, they automatically drop out of those audiences. No more spending to win back someone who already came back.
BlueConic brings those moving pieces together as a single Cart Abandonment Recovery Growth Play — a way for the team to manage the data, audiences, activation, and measurement behind a specific growth opportunity in one place. Instead of the program living across separate configurations or in the head of the person who built it, the full journey is visible to the marketers responsible for running and improving it.
Measurement is built into the same experience. The team can see recovery rate, recovered orders, and conversion value in real time and track progress against its revenue goal. Rather than adding up the conversions claimed separately by Marketing Cloud, Meta, and Google, BlueConic connects activation touchpoints back to confirmed orders and applies the same attribution logic across channels and markets.
That gives the marketing team one place to see the entire recovery journey—from the moment a shopper leaves their cart to the moment they come back and buy—and understand what that journey is contributing to the business.
Results
The cart recovery program is now live across all 15 EMEA markets—and the early results are promising. At the time the results were shared, the brand was pacing ahead of its €100,000 revenue goal, with thousands in recovered revenue each month.
The team can see that performance as it happens. Recovery rate, recovered orders, and conversion value are available in real time, using the same attribution logic across email, paid media, and all 15 markets. An analysis that once required data from multiple teams and manual work in Excel is now available in the same place marketers manage the program.
And the team is already looking at what comes next. The brand is exploring a suppression model to better distinguish between shoppers who are likely to buy on their own, those unlikely to convert, and the customers whose decision might actually be changed by an intervention. That could mean fewer unnecessary discounts and more focus on the shoppers where an incentive can make a difference.
The approach is now expanding into additional Growth Plays, giving the team new ways to apply the same model to other opportunities for customer growth.
With a clearer view of both the customer and the revenue being recovered, the team can keep learning—and make each intervention count.
